AFC West Division Preview E-mail
Written by Kyle Payne

The AFC West is one of the best divisions in football, and it is one of the only divisions with a chance to see each of its four teams improve its record from last season.

The San Diego Chargers are still the class of the division led by the NFL’s best running back in LaDainian Tomlinson. Last season the Bolts were 11-5 and lost a heartbreaking game to the New England Patriots for the AFC Championship. If QB Philip Rivers can recover from off-season knee surgery, they should have a good chance to improve their regular season mark and advance deep into the playoffs again. Defensively, the Chargers boast one of the league’s most athletic and aggressive defenses led by All-Pro’s Shawne Merriman and Antonio Cromartie.

San Diego will have to find a replacement for LT’s backup, Michael Turner, who got a lucrative free agent contract from the Atlanta Falcons. One player to watch will be rookie RB Jacob Hester from LSU. He is a versatile player who can play fullback or tailback, has excellent receiving skills out of the backfield and could even be used in a single-back set with his downhill running style.

The Denver Broncos are a team young at the core that may be one of the league’s surprises in 2008. After a 7-9 finish last year, Head Coach Mike Shannahan and the Broncos front office made some moves this off-season, gone are RB Travis Henry and WR Javon Walker. The addition of receivers Darrell Jackson, Samie Parker and Keary Colbert along with RB Michael Pittman will provide some new offensive options, but the success of the team will lie on the shoulders of QB Jay Cutler. Entering his third season, Cutler has proven that he has the physical tools to succeed in the NFL and this could be his breakout year.

Defensively, Denver’s cornerback’s, Champ Bailey and Dre’ Bly, help secure the perimeter of the defense while LB D.J. Williams is a tackling machine in the middle. If the veteran defense can remain intact, they should be in the top half of the league. While the new additions on offense may take a few weeks to mesh, Cutler may have to deal with some added pressure early in the season. One thing that could ease Bronco fans minds would be star WR Brandon Marshall staying out of trouble and out of off-season headlines.

The Kansas City Chiefs did not leave their fans with too much to be excited about last year. A 4-12 record and a quarterback carousel that produced little success left some wondering about Herm Edwards' job, luckily for the Chiefs the off-season gave some hope to a team that didn’t have much in 2007. Many experts felt Kansas City had the best draft of any team. They added DT Glenn Dorsey and OG Branden Albert in the first round, but they did trade All-Pro DE Jared Allen to secure that second first round selection.

QB Brodie Croyle will be handed the reins of the offense, for good, in 2008. The former Alabama star has the confidence of the organization, but one thing that could make Croyle’s job easier is for RB Larry Johnson to find his old form. After an injury plagued 2007, LJ is looking to find the magic of his 2005 and 2006 seasons where he rushed for more than 1700 yards each year. Giving him a hand in the backfield will be rookie RB Jamaal Charles, who the Chiefs picked up the third round.

The Oakland Raiders are finally showing signs of digging themselves out of the AFC West cellar. A laundry list of off-season additions is headlined by WR Javon Walker,S Gibril Wilson and the drafting of RB Darren McFadden, who should all be impact players in 2008. The Raiders also showed a commitment to their own free agents after 2007, by locking up veterans like CB Nnamdi Asomugha, DE Tommy Kelley and RB Justin Fargas.

But all of those additions won’t matter much if QB JaMarcus Russell plays like a rookie. After a holdout last year and limited action in his first year, Russell will take over for Oakland this season. He is the biggest, and maybe the strongest-armed gunslinger in the league, but his ability to adapt to NFL defenses will be a hurdle to clear early in 2008. If he can live up to half his potential, the Raiders can expect to immediately build off of their 4-12 mark in 2007.
